ASU SAAC honors student-athletes in ceremony

The Albany State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Student-Athlete Affairs hosted its' 3rd ASU Student-Athlete Honors Ceremony on April 23rd. The program was geared to celebrate the spring graduation of former and current ASU athletes and the service efforts of the SAAC representatives.

“ASU SAAC and Student-Athlete Affairs believes in celebrating our student-athletes when they have accomplished great feats,” said Stan McCormick, SAAC advisor. “In addition, it’s always an exciting moment when our student-athletes receive their degrees.”

The ASU SAAC presented the 18 graduating student-athletes with commemorative pins for their accomplishments. The student-athletes represented nine of 11 sports and cheerleading.

The ASU SAAC also honored 11 seniors who served their final year in the organization. Those honorees included SAAC President Vanessa Jones, Vice-President Reanah Kellogg, Treasurer Nehemyah Price, Parliamentarian Ebony Stone, Male Representative Janell Jones, and sport representatives Danielle Colson, Shelby Gale, Sherinna Lewis, Adrienne Morris, Corbin Williams and HPER representative Dallas Neloms.  Vanessa Jones, Kellogg, Price, Stone, Lewis, Morris and Williams were also presented the SAAC Emeritus Award for their three years of service in the organization.

“These student-athletes played a vital part in our SAAC organization during their tenure,” McCormick said. “They have served the students of Albany State and the community well. We are sad to see them go, but we are excited about the new opportunities that await them.”

The program was also highlighted by the induction of six new student-athletes into the Eta Chapter of the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society. The honor society recognizes student-athletes who have achieved junior status and a 3.4 grade point average. Inducted by SAAC President and charter member Vanessa Jones, the new members include Kedeemya Cooper, women basketball; Achiaa Davis, cheerleading; Devante Hines, football; Jakkay Hayes-Myricks, cheerleading; Tawana Lewis, cheerleading; and Elontavius White, men’s track & field.

Awards were also presented to the freshmen student-athletes who served in newly-created L.E.A.D. (Leadership Experiences and Development) Academy.  Those athletes included Cedric Ashe, football; Keveena Jackson, women’s volleyball; Artisha Holston, women’s basketball; Aaron Hughes, men’s basketball; Anthony Hart, baseball; Ambrionna Atkism, women’s softball; Morgane Rainwater, women’s track & field; Jared Jordan, men’s track & field; and Subrica Redding, cheerleading.

ASU Athletics Director Dr. Richard H. Williams hopes that the SAH program will continue to be a huge tradition for the department.

“This program was a huge success,” Dr. Williams said. “It’s a great thing to see teammates, families and friends attend to show their support in celebrating these student-athletes. Coach McCormick and Student-Athlete Affairs are to be commended for their outstanding efforts in producing this event.”
