Reid receives degree completion award

After completing her athletic career as an Albany State University Lady Ram, former women's volleyball player Janeka Reid has been selected to receive the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award. The award will give Reid an opportunity to complete their undergraduate degree at the ASU. She will receive $6,000 in scholarship funds for the 2013-2014 academic year to complete degree requirements.

"As a proud Lady Ram for life, I am ecstatic about this accomplishment," said Reid. "I am so thankful to my coaches and teammates for constantly motivating me on the court and in the classroom."

A biology major from Savannah, Georgia, Reid was a four-year letterman for the ASU women's volleyball program. She was a charter member of the Chi Alpha Sigma (Eta Chapter) National Honor Society for student-athletes. This year, she was received an ASU Academic Achievement Award for athletics, the Highest Major GPA Award and the Department of Natural Sciences Certificate of Achievement Award. Reid was also named to the Dean's List and the ASU Athletics S.A.M.E. (Student-Athletes Maintaining Excellence) List during the fall and spring semesters.

"This is a great opportunity for Janeka to complete her degree and graduate, and we are thrilled that she has received this accomplishment," said Dr. Richard H. Williams, athletics director at Albany State. "Our goals as an eminent athletics program are to produce student-athletes who are successful in their academic endeavors as well as their athletic pursuits. She has proven herself in both areas, and she represents the very best of our student-athletes at Albany State."

The NCAA established the Division II Degree-Completion Award Program in 2001 to provide deserving student-athletes financial assistance for them to complete their first baccalaureate degree. Students who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid were eligible for nomination. The selection process for the national award emphasizes the academic performance of the student-athlete. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities. Of the student-athletes who have received the award since its inception, 94 percent have earned their undergraduate degree using this program.
