Tony McWhite joined the Albany State University football staff as the Defensive Backs Coach on February 20. He possesses a diverse coaching background that spans collegiate football, sports performance, and high school athletics. McWhite is recognized for his expertise in developing defensive talent and enhancing athlete performance. He effectively combines technical football knowledge with strength and conditioning skills to foster the growth of student-athletes both on and off the field.

Prior to his appointment at Albany State, McWhite served as a football strength and conditioning assistant beginning in January 2024. In this capacity, he collaborated with the coaching staff to design and implement comprehensive training programs that focused on strength, speed, agility, flexibility, and conditioning for collegiate football athletes. He also monitored athletes' nutrition, body weight, and attendance while contributing to the holistic development of student-athletes. Moreover, McWhite managed administrative responsibilities, supervised interns, and maintained the strength and conditioning facility to ensure an optimal training environment.

McWhite's previous experience includes a position at Appling County High School in Baxley, Georgia, where he acted as the Head Football Strength Coach, Defensive Backs Coach, and Cyber Lab Teacher from June 2023 to January 2024. During this tenure, he instructed and supervised student-athletes in strength, speed, and conditioning techniques, conducted performance testing, and generated training reports for coaches and administrators. On the field, he concentrated on developing defensive backs through technique refinement and strategic execution. In the classroom, he directed the school’s Credit Recovery program, aiding students in improving their academic standing while balancing their athletic commitments.

Earlier in his career, McWhite gained collegiate-level experience as a Strength and Conditioning Intern within the football program at Georgia Tech during the spring of 2023. In addition to supporting football training operations, he designed and implemented conditioning programs for the men’s cheerleading team, thereby broadening his experience with diverse athletic populations.

McWhite also served in dual roles at Mississippi Valley State University in 2022 as the Interim Director of Sports Performance and Defensive Quality Control. As Interim Director, he oversaw strength and conditioning programs for multiple sports, developing performance enhancement strategies that integrated training, sports medicine, nutrition, and mental health. In his capacity as Defensive Quality Control, he conducted advanced scouting, film analysis, and report preparation to assist the defensive coaching staff in game planning and opponent evaluation, while also leading the scout team in weekly preparations.

Before his tenure at Mississippi Valley State, McWhite held the position of Assistant Coach (Safeties and Nickels) and Special Teams Coordinator at Saint Augustine’s University from August 2021 to June 2022. In this role, he provided leadership for the defensive secondary and special teams units, organized film breakdown sessions, and assisted in game plan development. His contributions resulted in notable improvements in team performance and special teams production.

Throughout his coaching career, McWhite has been a part of several successful programs. His efforts have facilitated teams in achieving significant accomplishments, including the 2023 GHSA 2A Region 3 Championship, the development of eight Mississippi Valley State players who received Phil Steele All-SWAC honors, and helping Saint Augustine’s lead Division II in punt return average during the 2021 season. Additionally, he participated in a program that captured the 2018 CIAA Southern Division Championship.

McWhite earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from Campbell University in 2017, where he participated on a full academic and athletic scholarship. He holds a USA Weightlifting Level 1 Coach certification and is certified in CPR and First Aid, reflecting his dedication to athlete development, safety, and performance.
